2011 NBA Playoffs: Memphis Grizzlies Eliminate San Antonio Spurs thumbnail

The Memphis Grizzlies hung tough against a resilient San Antonio Spurs to win 99-91 on Friday night, winning the first round of the NBA Playoffs and advancing to the NBA Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The top-seed Spurs had the second best record in the NBA and the best win-loss record in the Western Conference. However, the eighth-seed Grizzlies had the size, youth and a more balanced lineup. The series ended with the Grizzlies winning their first playoffs series at 4-2.

The Spurs defended well but Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph made some tough shots to keep them at bay in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies defense also came into play as the shooters of San Antonio could not pull the trigger from three-point area.

Memphis played without shooting forward and leading scorer Rudy Gay but the late addition of Shane Battier seemed to be a good fit for the team. Battier is not known to be a prolific scorer like Gay but his has made contributions on defense on the defensive end of the court.
