Jacksonville State stunned the Mississippi Rebels 49-48 in double overtime on Saturday in their college football season opener. This has been the biggest comeback so far for the Jacksonville Gamecocks as they trailed Ole Miss 10-31 in the first half.

Jacksonville slowly cut the lead with a 3-0 third quarter and a 21-3 run in the fourth quarter, overcoming a 21-point half time lead to tie the score at 34-34 forcing overtime.

Coty Blanchard made two crucial plays in the late part of the second overtime. His 30-yard touchdown pass to Kevyn Cooper closed the gap at 48-47. In the last play, Blanchard lofted a pass to Calvin Middleton who was at the right place at the right time, scoring for two points that set up the final score, 49-48.

Jacksonville could just have settled for a game tying play but coach Jack Crowe called for game winning play that paid off. For Houston Nutt, coach of the losing team Ole Miss, this must be the worst career loss.
