Earth Day: Earth Day 2011 Celebrated by Sports Players in NHL and MLB – Today, April 22, 2011 is Earth Day 2011. Earth Day is a yearly celebration to increase our environmental awareness and to make conscious efforts to save Earth and Mother Nature in general.

As today’s Earth Day celebration, we all need to participate in saving our planet Earth against further devastation by talking “green”. Global warming and climate change has been hunting us ever since we become agents of pollution in our environment causing extreme weather conditions. For today’s Earth Day 2011 celebrations, we tracked both NHL and MLB teams and players on their Earth Day activities.

For MLB teams, the Indians and Twins will wear green caps during their game Friday night at Target Field; the Mariners will introduce a new environmental mascot called Kid Compost; the Reds will host a major e-waste drive; and the Pirates will host an energy-free day at PNC Park.

These are just some of the many ways Major League Baseball is recognizing Earth Day on Friday, and, in reality, this is more symbolic of the culture that exists year-round at the 30 ballparks and within the game’s workforce. MLB and its clubs are committed to a future that embraces operational efficiency, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

The Pirates have a big Earth Day planned before their Friday night game against Washington. Giveaways include a “Let’s Go Bucs, Let’s Go Green” T-shirt made from earth-friendly recycled fibers, and a reusable coffee sleeve. Trash pickup will take place on North Shore prior to the game, involving Pirates employees and local volunteers. More than 30 environmentally friendly local organizations will meet on Federal Street before the game to discuss with fans the programs and initiatives they have implemented.

Meanwhile, in the world of NHL, NHL Clubs have implemented environmental programs in their communities and sustainability efforts in their facilities.  Here is a snapshot of how several NHL Clubs have participated in activities and events leading up to and around Earth Day.

Nashville: The Predators and Bridgestone Arena are committed to recycling efforts which collect, sort and correctly dispose of aluminum, paper, plastic and cooking oils.  Earlier this year, Bridgestone Arena installed energy-conservation controls on the ice plant, as well as an energy efficient High Dry system in the Predators locker room.  For Earth Day, the facility is pursuing new “green” building upgrades, such as updating from T12 to T8 fluorescent lighting, replacing 100 watt metal halides with 24 watt compact fluorescents, converting pneumatic hot and chilled water valves to electric controlled valves, and testing bladeless air hand dryers in the arena.

Phoenix: The Coyotes held a month-long “Going Green” celebration, sponsored by American Solar Electric.   In partnership with the City of Glendale, the Coyotes collected and safely recycled fans old cell phones at Jobing.com Arena.   Throughout the season, the Coyotes invited prominent environmental agencies, such as the Environmental Fund for Arizona, Habitat for Humanity and the Desert Botanical Garden, to assist in advocating for their environmental causes.
