Great Grete Waitz Defeated By Cancer thumbnail

One of marathon’s great runners and the only one in the history who were able to win (9) nine New York City Marathons in a span of ten years was finally defeated. Grete Waitz, the elite Norwegian runner bid goodbye to the world after battling deadly cancer.

Waitz, 57 died early Tuesday at the Ulleval University Hospital in Oslo according to Helle Aanesen, the manager of the Active Against Cancer Foundation in Norway.

In the history of any marathon, Waitz set the record of world best in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds and started winning from 1978 up t0 1988. It is a winning streak that no male or female runner ever acquired. She joined the world championship of the marathon 1983 in Helsinki, Finland and grab the gold. “Grete Waitz was one of a kind,” Norwegian Athletics Federation president Svein Arne Hansen said. “To me, she was also the greatest athlete we’ve had in Norwegian history.”

The current marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe also remembered Waitz as “an amazing champion and more amazing person” in her tweet.
