James Toney gets his welcome party to the world of mixed martial arts on August 28 at the TD Garden in Boston MA. Toney faces MMA legend Randy Couture in a co-main event at UFC 118 that headlines the rematch between former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn and current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. As the fight date nears, there has been more hype and trash talking in the Toney-Couture matchup. Most if not all of the trash talk in fact is coming from NABO and IBA heavyweight champion James Toney.
Toney has done what Chael Sonnen has leading to a near upset win over UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Toney has probably helped sell the fight as Dana White would have wanted to but the question remains whether he can put his money where his mouth is.
Randy Couture will surely try to ground and pound his way to a victory to spoil Toney’s welcome party to the UFC. Toney has a puncher’s chance to score a knockout any time. A heavyweight boxing champion using four-ounce gloves will always have that winning chance of a knockout if Couture gets careless. The odds though are stacked in favor of the 47-year old ageless warrior who has mixed it up with the best MMA fighters for generations.
