The St. Louis Cardinals closed the last game of their weekend series against the NL Central leaders Cincinnati Reds with a 4-2 win on Sunday. Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer at the bottom of the 6th to take the lead for good.

3. Sunday, September 5: St. Louis def. Cincinnati, 4-2
The Cardinals took two out of three games in their weekend series with the Reds to inch a little closer to the NL Central leaders. The Cardinals are still trailing the Reds by seven games and they still have 28 games to play in the regular season.
Chris Carpenter came up with a dominant effort on Sunday with a season-high 11 strikeouts, exceeding his previous season record of 10 done in April. Carpenter seems to have the number of Central opponents as he has gone 44-16 overall, at 18-4 in the last two seasons.
