Just when everyone thought that the Minnesota Vikings were done for the game and essentially for the season, an aging and hurting quarterback saved the day for them. Brett Favre led a fourth quarter comeback from a 14-point deficit to beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-24 in overtime on Sunday.
The 41-year old quarterback’s late game heroics may have even saved the job of Brad Childress for now whose job security has been questionable in recent weeks.
Favre made 36 of 47 passes for a career-high 446 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in his latest comeback win. This last one is his 46th fourth quarter comeback win.
Arizona quarterback Derek Anderson made 15 of 26 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.
The Vikings trailed the Cardinals 14-10 at halftime behind a kick-off return that LaRod Stephens-Howling converted into a 96-yard touchdown. A touchdown pass by Derek Anderson to Andre Roberts built the halftime lead. Favre threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Peterson while Ryan Longwell kicked a field goal in the second quarter to keep the game within striking distance.
Arizona extended the lead 21-10 when Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin fumbled on a kickoff return early in the third quarter. Michael Adams recovered the fumble and scored on a 30-yard touchdown to give the Cardinals an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Jay Feely scored on a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend the Cardinals lead to 24-10. With five minutes left in the game, Favre led the Vikings that inched closer on an Adrian Peterson touchdown with 3:34 left in the game.
Brett Favre forced overtime with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe to tie the score 24-24.
In the overtime period, Favre set up Ryan Longwell in scoring position by completing a 22-yard pass to Bernard Berrian.
