Vitor Belfort Injured, Replaced By Nate Marquardt vs Yushin Okami At UFC 122 thumbnail

UFC Middleweight fighter Vitor Belfort suffered an injury and has just pulled out of his scheduled match against Yushin Okami at UFC 122 on November 13 in Germany. Details on Belfort’s injury have not been disclosed.

The matchup between Belfort and Okami was supposed to be the UFC 122 main event that would determine the No. 1 contender to the UFC Middleweight Championship currently held by Anderson Silva. In place of Belfort, Nate Marquardt has been tapped to face Okami for the eliminator match.

It can be recalled that Marquardt was on his way to challenge Silva for the Middleweight belt had he won against Chael Sonnen in February of this year. Chael Sonnen scored an upset decision win over Marquardt despite suffering a huge cut on the forehead from a Marquardt elbow strike. Sonnen eventually lost a come-from-behind triangle choke submission loss after dominating Silva for four and a half rounds.

Marquardt recovered from that Sonnen loss by knocking out Rousimar Palhares at UFC Fight Night 22 last Wednesday. Luck must be on his side as his comeback trail to being a top contender has taken a shortcut of sorts.

Belfort on the other hand has not been fortunate as he has suffered a string of injuries on his way to contending for a title match.

    Vitor has been angry that he hasn’t gotten the chance to take on Silva while since 2008. Now that his promised fight had been canceled due to Silva Sonnen 2, and also due to him not instantly getting booted to take on Silva after the Sonnen PED fallout, I wouldn’t be surprised that Vitor is just pulling out of the fight due to utter disgust with the UFC.
